What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer paper labels?

Direct thermal labels use heat-sensitive paper that darkens when the printhead applies heat — no ribbon is needed. However, direct thermal prints fade over time with heat, light, and chemical exposure. Thermal transfer labels use a ribbon to transfer ink onto the label surface, producing durable prints that resist fading, moisture, and abrasion. Use thermal transfer for any label that needs to remain legible for more than 6 months.
