How do I choose the right soldering tip size?

Select a tip width that matches approximately 60-80% of the solder pad width. A tip that is too small will not transfer enough heat, leading to cold joints. A tip that is too large risks bridging adjacent pads. For general through-hole work, a 1.6mm chisel tip is a good starting point.

What is the difference between T18 and T15 HAKKO tips?

T18 tips are designed for the HAKKO FX-888D, FX-888DX, and FX-600 stations. T15 tips are shorter, cartridge-style tips used with the higher-performance FX-951, FM-203, and FM-206 stations. T15 tips have a built-in heater and sensor for faster thermal recovery. The two series are not interchangeable.

How often should I replace my soldering tip?

Replace your soldering tip when you notice poor heat transfer, visible pitting or erosion of the tip plating, or difficulty tinning the tip surface. With proper care (regular cleaning, keeping the tip tinned when idle, using appropriate temperatures), a quality HAKKO tip can last several months of daily production use.

Why does my soldering tip oxidize quickly?

Rapid tip oxidation is usually caused by running the iron at too high a temperature, leaving the tip un-tinned during idle periods, or using aggressive flux cleaners. Always tin the tip with fresh solder before putting the iron in the holder, use the lowest effective temperature, and clean with a brass wire sponge rather than a wet sponge.
