Thermal Wire Stripping With FT-802

Now I on Hakko webinars, for those of you who are unfamiliar with our Hakko webinars, what we do here is we pick a product, a Hakko product, and we go over the specs, the features and benefits, and we give a quick demonstration of how those products work. Now, most of you may be familiar with Hakko for our soldering desoldering hot air rework fume extraction tools, but today we're going to be going over a pretty unique tool.

It's a thermal wire shipper called the FT-802. Now, before I jump right into the specs and features and benefits of the thermal wire stripper. Let me just explain a little bit about what a thermal wire stripper does, how it's different from a conventional mechanical washer brand and why you need to use them. Now, first of all, let me show you what a mechanical wire stripper is. Something that looks like this. This is one of our CHP brand wire strippers. It's called the CHP-30-20 pretty self-explanatory mechanical wire strippers, where the blades will cut into the insulation. In order for you to be able to remove the insulation. Again, the blades cut into the insulation. That's the conventional type of mechanical washers. But when you're talking about thermal wire shippers, what they do is even though we call them blades, they don't actually the blades don't cut into the, what it does is because there are thermal wire strippers, like the words imply, it uses heat to melt the installation, to separate the installation.

That way you can gently twist and pull off the insulation from the cable. That's the big difference using heat versus a sharp blade. Now, why would you not want to use a blade? Because when using a conventional type of blade to cut through the installation that has the risk, or it has the potential to damage the inside of the inner strands or the conductors that are underneath the insulation, that's why you don't want to use the mechanical wire strippers. Now what happens when you end up damaging the conductors? What happens is that the current or the signals that are passing through these conductors, you may not get a hundred percent reliability from it for the final product. So a lot of our customers that are in the military defense, medical space and aerospace industries, our customers in those industries on specific applications, they will not allow you to use mechanical wire strippers

So they instead use our FTA to thermal wire strippers. Okay. And that the arrow two, this is not our first thermal wire stripper that we've developed over the years. The FT-802 first started off with a protocol. What we call the FT-800 that evolved into the FT-801. That was the second generation of our thermal wire stripper. And it was a good product. It did the job, but it still had some small issues with alignment and with a heat transfer. So we took that feedback from the market and we developed the FT-802. So the FTA to one now involved into the FTE-802, which is what we have here in front of me today. And that's what we're going to be going over on this webinar today. Now what makes the FT-802 that much greater than the FT-800 or the FT-801?

Well, there's a lot of things that our engineers did put in a lot of work into to make. The FT-802 a great performing tool. Now, I can't give you all the secrets here today, but I will share with you a couple of improvements that we made, and that involves the actual handpiece and the blades. The blades are now a new series of blades called G4 series of blades. Let me show you here real quick. What our old handpiece looks like. This is what our old hand looked like on the FT-802. It's called the FT-8002 hand piece. And this is our new FT-8004 hand piece that you can use on the FT-802 looking at it we've completely redesigned the handpiece itself, but what did we change on the handpiece? We actually put in a tweezer, this is a tweezer construction, that hand piece, the tweezer act as a, like a backbone, whereas a foundation for the hand piece.

And what that allowed us to do was to improve the alignment when you squeeze in the hand piece, because it's using the tweezer construction, the alignment at the blade end was massively improved. Okay? That along with the new position of the heaters themselves on the old G2 style blades, the heaters ran along this area of the blade. More so along the enclosure pipe, which was a little bit further away from the actual contact surface of what you're trying to cut. But on the G4 blades, the heaters are now much more closer. Look here, let me get a close up from that, actually. So this is the new blade, the G4 blade. And as you can see here, the heaters are now located in this location. So it's much closer to the actual contact surface of what we were trying to cut. So what does that mean?

That means better he transfer, which resulted in a cleaner cut of the installation itself. So new G4 blades. Now, while we're on this camera, let me also explain along with the tweezer construction of the handpiece, you see these two set screws. These are rather important because they not only act as a secure point to hold the blades in place, but you can use this to make your final adjustment on your alignment so that the blades line up completely. There you go. See how those that blades up. You can screw in the set, screw, insert the plates, tightened in the set screws close in the hand piece, make your final adjustment, and then tighten down your set screws that you see that you get the, just the perfect alignment on your G4 blades. So those are some of the improvements that we made on the FTA two and the G4 blades going over the specs and features really quick.

The settings that you're allowed to make on the FT-802 remain pretty much the same, anywhere from 5% to all the way up to a hundred percent, we did make a minor tweak on the FT-802 where if you go into the system parameters, you can actually increase the maximum allowable setting from 100% up to 120%. So that's a little bit of a difference. It's a benefit I added onto the FT-802 station. There's also built in tool holders and blade holders in the back of the station itself. It's easy to carry. There's also a blade removal plate located on the station, and this is the handpiece holder. So there's no need for a separate handpiece holder anymore. All you have to do is place the handpiece on top of the station and then act as a holder itself. Now, as far as the, the parameters on the station, it comes equipped standard with other features such as auto sleep auto shutoff, password lockouts.

Those are basic features that are on our, all of our stations, those, so they will come equipped with the FT-802 as well. Now let's get into the blades, the actual blades that I mentioned a little bit earlier, the improved position of the heaters allowing for a better cut the blades. You still have three different types of blades available. One is the straight version it's called the G4-1601, the straight version of the blades. There's also the -1602, which is the notch version allowing you to strip anywhere from 18 to 28 gauge wire. And then we also have the -1603, which will allow you to strip anywhere from .26, all the way down to a 38 gauge wire. Now that 38 gauge wire capability, that's something that was not on the previous G2 blades. So again, that's another addition. Another benefit that we've added into the FT-802 and the G4 style of blades.

So I went over the specs, the features, the blades, the improvement points that we made. I now want to go over the actual demonstration, demonstrating how to strip the insulation off of the, off of the cables and wires. But before I jumped right into that, let me point out. There's a couple important factors that you need to know before you strip your wire. One is you need to know the actual gauge or the size of the cable that you're working with. And two, you need to know the material of the installation that you're trying to remove. So for example, if you're working with a 18 gauge wire, you need to select the proper blade that will allow you to strip the 18 gauge wire. So in this case, I have selected a G4-1602 blade because it allowed me to strip 18 to 20 gauge wire.

Now the next step, I need to know the material because not all materials, insulation materials are made equal. Some materials are easier to strip or melt than others. For example, PVC nylon, they're a lot more easier to melt than materials such as Teflon. Okay? So depending on the material you're going to need to the settings on your station. Now you may have a question. I know the material, but how do I know what settings to set on my FT-802 well, to get you guys started off with, we include a reference chart. Like you see here with every thermal wire, stripper station that we have made available. And on the chart, you'll find various materials with our recommended settings on there, for example, on the chart, there's PVC, we recommend you start with the setting of 10 and for nylon, we recommend a setting of 20 and with a material such as Teflon, we recommend the setting of 55 to start off with now, just know that depending on the actual cable, that short application that you're working on, you may have to adjust the settings a little bit and I'll show you how to do that here right now, as I turn on the station, I had this cable here that I'm working with, it's Teflon, but there's also a Teflon and a Kapton tape material wrapped around inside of the Teflon.

So I couldn't just go off of the fifty-five. I had to increase that to 85. So right now you can see the display reads 20%. I want to change that up to 85%. So how do I do that? It's really easy. You can press and hold any one of these three buttons, any one of them. So I'm going to press and hold the upper one. You'll see that the display will begin to flash. At that point, I'm ready to make my changes so I can either use the up and down button. In my case, I need to go from 20 all the way up to 85%. So I'm going to hit the up button until I hit 85. Once I hit 85, I come down and hit the enter button. And that's how you make your changes. Now, while the display is flashing, that means the station is trying to get to its settings.

Okay? Once the display has stopped flashing, then that means it has reached its setting. So while I'm waiting for it to reach, it's setting other goals, I'm going to put on my gloves here, go, and I have with me here on this side, I have a couple of different cables that I'm going to try to show you as part of a demonstration. I'm going to show you a couple of different methods. Now, one is a method I do not recommend, and I want everyone to try to avoid, okay. So let me try to the right angle here. There you go. Okay. This is about a 22 gauge wire. So I'm going to use the third notch.

So here it is, where you don't want to do is let me find that there you go, grip and grip. You don't want to grip and rip it like I did there. That is not the proper way we are taught to use the thermal washer again, because when you're doing, when you're using such a method, you grip and rip, as you're, as you're pulling the hand piece of the blade to rip the installation off while you're actually doing is you're actually scraping you. You have the, yeah, the danger of scraping the inner wires or the inner conductors with the blade. So that defeats the whole purpose of using a thermal wire shipper. So you don't want to do that. The proper method here is to get your wire again, use the proper notch, and then you want to score it. Then you want to gently remove it till you get that space.

You see that space, you get that separation. And from here, use your fingers to twist gently twist and pull back the installation. That's the proper way you want to use these thermal wire strippers. Again, I'll show that to you. One more time, find the proper notch on your blades and go score it gently. And then gently remove till you get just that slight separation in the installation. And from here, use your fingers to twist and remove. Oops, I didn't get that twisting part, but you get the idea. You don't want to do the gripping and ripping because that's gonna, you have the, you have the danger of damaging or nicking your inner strands or your inner conductors. And that's the whole purpose of using a thin washer is not to damage your inner conductors or wires. So please use the proper technique. The proper method use it to score slightly gently remove.

And then from there, you can use your fingers to gently twist and remove the installation back in off of these strands. Now, after you're done using it from time to time, as you're using these tools, you may find that you get some of the, the material, the insulation stuck onto the blades themselves. In that case, you can use a tool such as the RFT-800. Now the FT-700. This is a tool that we normally recommend to our users to Polish our, your soldering iron tips to get rid of oxidation. It's a rotating brass brush on the inside. So the brass material is actually softer than the material on the soldering iron. So there's no worry of damaging the surface of the soldering iron same thing. The brass material is softer than the material of the blades themselves. So there's no need of worrying about damaging the surface of the blades.

So if you do get material stuck onto the blades themselves, you can use the FT-700 and just stick it in there for a couple seconds. And that will remove any kind of insulation that may be stuck onto your blades. Okay? Once you're done using them, you can place your hand piece on top of the station, the station onto the holder. I mean, sorry. And then the holder will recognize that the hand piece is set in the holder and the station says, SLP, that means sleep. It's going to sleep mode, try reducing the temperature of the other blades while it's not in use. Now, the other thing is the blade removal plate. You can, which one you use the blade removal plate. You have to remove the couple of set screws that are located on one on the left. One on the right. So I'm going to go ahead and do that. No, maybe that's a better angle for you guys. There's one. And I'm going to go ahead and move the other side.

All right. Once you have both set screws removed, what you do is your insert. You use the blade removal tool, insert the blades inside, and you want to pull the hand piece up. You don't want to pull the hand piece backwards towards you. The whole point is to remove, pull the hand piece and you'll be able to remove the blades even well, the blades are still hot. There's no need to use a heat resistant pad anymore. You can use a blade removal tool to remove your hot G4 blades. Now I'm going to set that aside there for now. Make sure I don't lose my set screws. Now we also have, we also carry an optional accessory called the FT-8003. That's a hot knife blade that you can also use with the FT-802 thermal wire from a wire Superstation. We have two different types of blades available for the FT-8003.

And those are meant to cut away a larger cables and wires like you see in the, in the image there. So if you're working with larger cables and wires, make sure you guys check that out. So I went over the product, the specs, the features, a quick demonstration of the proper technique on how to strip away the installation. Again, I wanna reiterate, try don't grip and rip use the proper technique of gently melt, scoring and melting away the installation separating it just slightly. And from there, twist and remove with your fingers. That way you ensure that the inner conductors or the inner strands are not damaged. Okay.
