and for today's episode we'll be covering the Hakko FX-888D starting station, but before we get started today i just want to say welcome back everyone we took a few months off to make some additions to our recording studio here we got some new equipment but now that we got the equipment back in we got the lights set up. The show will go on so thank you again for joining us thanks everyone for registering and participating in today's
live webinar like i said today we'll be going over Hakko FX-888D soldering station and for today's episode i'll be going over the station. I'll be going some of the accessories the basic specs but most importantly for today's episode I want to go over the basic operation of how to use it, how to show you guys how it's really simple to use the unit and maybe clear up some of the confusion that's uh that occurs with some of our users. unit so let's get started right away uh let's get started with the covering over just the basic spec info and accessories.
The Hakko FX-888D soldering station uh like you see here um the standard operating temperature you can set it anywhere from 50 to 480 degrees celsius and in fahrenheit that's about 120 to 899 fahrenheit there's other useful features if you go into the system parameters like you could put in program up to five presets and you can also put in password lockouts on the station itself again those are all features that you can access through the system parameters
i'm not going to get into detail into those features today if you want more information on that you can visit HAKKOusa.com go to the Hakko FX-888D product page by putting that product number into the search box and on that product page you'll be able to find all sorts of useful information on videos on how to set up presets and how to set up password lockouts.
Okay these are the accessories that you can attach to the Hakko FX-888D starting off with the standard 8801 that's the standard iron that comes with the station and the station comes with a standard iron and also a 1.6 millimeter chisel tip okay the next accessory sold separately of course is the 8802 looks similar in size to the 8801 standard but this 8802 is actually a nitrogen compatible handpiece then next over we have the 8803 this is a manual solder feeding gun so what you can do is you can actually feed your solder through this area pull on the trigger here
and it'll feed the solder out the other end like i said it's a manual solder feeding gun and then we have here the 8804 this is a hot tweezer used for some surface mount rework and the tweezers actually come with a two millimeter set of tweezer tips as well and the last accessory over here is the FX8805 this is the larger handpiece that you can attach to the Hakko FX-888D and for the larger FX8805 handpiece you'll be able to use the larger T19 series of tips as well so all in all five different handpiece that you'll be able to use with the FX888D.
Now we got that out of the way let's get into uh the topic for today the main top for today going over the basic operation and just showing you showing everyone how really simple it is to use the FX888D and clearing some of the confusion so right out of the box you have the iron holder the iron and the station once you plug the handpiece into the station plug the power into the outlet okay all you have to do is uh turn the power on and the display will show 750 that's the factory uh default setting 750 and you'll see immediately the temperature will begin to ramp up and it'll take a few seconds for it to reach to 750 but while it's reaching its set temperature the first thing i recommend everyone do at this point while you're waiting is to grab your soldering iron right and let's wait till it gets a little bit hotter maybe to around 600 660 and at that point.
The first thing i recommend everyone do at this point is to just get a solder and feed the tip flood the tip with some solder clean it off get it a nice fresh coating of solder especially for brand new tips and what this is doing is it's it's actually creating a coating layer on your soldering iron tip protecting the tip from surrounding air and oxidation so that's the very first thing i would recommend everyone do for new tips and also before you put your iron away into your holder okay so uh now that we see the display 750 now 750 degrees fahrenheit that's actually a very nice standard operating temperature for you to begin uh working on your application especially in your diy hobby markets so the station itself is already set for everyone to begin using right away there's really nothing you have to do at this point you get started working right away
however if you do or you want to change your set temperature really easy way you can do
That there's an enter button and a button so you press and hold the enter button the your display will begin to flash and at this point you scroll through by pressing the up button say i want to go to 660 for example i scroll through till i hit the six press enter to move over
go to my desired selection hit enter and then zero i'm okay there so i hit enter
Again and you'll see on my display that my set temperature is going down from 750 down to 660. i just changed my set temperature really easy right all you have to do is press and hold the
enter button okay so let's go ahead and do that again so press and hold the enter button right it'll flash again let's bring it back up to 750 7 enter wait till it gets to five enter
and enter okay now it's going from 660 back up to 750. that's how you make changes to your set temperature.
now for the 88d without getting into the
system parameters there's a couple
things you can do
on the 88d you can one change your set
temperature like i did now
that's changing your set temperature
another thing you can do is you can uh
enter adjustment mode and you can adjust
your set temperature
one is changing your temperature when
it's adjusting your set temperature
they i know they sound uh similar but
they're actually two different things
okay
so i'll explain a little bit um change
your set temperature like i did now you
actually change your set temperature
adjusting your set temperatures you're
keeping your set temperature the same
as 750 but you're adjusting the
temperature a little bit
what do i mean by that here we go
so to give you guys a better explanation
i have my display reading 750 but i have
a
nice thermometer here fg 100b that i can
use to measure
my actual tip uh temperature
and if i measure my tip temperature it's
actually reading
and you're somewhere around 780 right so
780 at my tip
temperature but my display
actually is set to 750
which is still fine you can still use it
perfectly fine but for those of you who
would like to get
that window closer that tolerance
tighter within the tighter tolerance
that's when you can use the adjustment
mode right that's what the adjustment
mode is there for
and um to use the adjustment mode you
really need
some kind of a tip temperature
measurement tool
like the fg-100b that i have here to
make use of the adjustment
mode so here is how do you enter the
adjustment mode
you enter press and hold the up button
it'll say adjust and at this point you
enter what
you measured on your thermometer i
measured entered what 780
was it so i go seven eight zero
and then you'll see my temperature is
dropping down from what i entered
back down to 750 and you'll notice that
in adjustment mode
your set temperature like i said stays
the same but i just
adjusted my set temperature some we call
it
also call it offset but it's the same
same
referring to the same thing if i take
another measurement
of my tip of my iron
then it should fall closer
to 750.
there you go
so that's what the adjustment mode is
you're keeping the set temperature the
same but you're adjusting
your set temperature and i understand
this is where some of the
confusion um may arise with some of our
customers
for example they want to you guys want
to change the set temperature but you
accidentally enter into the wrong mode
right what do i mean by that so you know
i just opened up the FX888D
unit i'm using it factory default 750
but say i want to change
uh the set temperature i want to go to
800 for example i want to use it at 800.
so
without reading the manual um i probably
think you know
yeah you know up i want to increase my
temperature so let's go ahead
and press this up button that's probably
right
so they you enter into the adjustment
mode right and then yeah i want to
adjust yeah i want to change my
temperature that's right adjust it yeah
then you get this display and then you
go ahead and put in 8
0 0. oh
whoa what's going on i put 800
but my display is going back down to 750
what
what's going on let me try it again
so you do that again enter adjustment
mode
and then you go in and do
that again it it's doing it again
what is going on i'm trying to change my
temperature but it keeps dropping my
temperature
and i can't change my set temperature
from 750 to 800.
what in the world is going on
so you probably do end up doing this you
know at least three times
and maybe after the third time you
figure out something's not right
so maybe at this point you decide to go
back
and read the manual and while reading
the manual you figure out you know
press how to change the temperature you
press and hold the enter button you
figure that part out
so after going through the adjustment
mode three times
you finally figured it out and you press
and hold the enter button
and then you go eight zero
zero
cool it did it it stayed 800 it's not
going down
i think i did the right thing i think
the iron's at 800 now cool i could get
started working right away but
that's not true because prior to this
you went through three cycles
of going into adjustment mode of
adjusting from 800 to 750
f so that's three cycles of 50 degrees
fahrenheit
so that's what 150 degrees fahrenheit
that you should be off
from 800 so you may think
now that you're at 800 but in reality
your tips are somewhere close to 650.
there you go 660. right
and that again that's because you enter
adjustment mode three times prior to
figuring out how to correctly uh change
your set temperature remember changing
your set temperature
all you have to do is press and hold the
down the enter button
don't press and hold the up button press
another enter button okay
um so like i said at this point if you
have a tip thermometer like fg 100b
it's really easy to do the fix measure
your tip uh
temperature go into adjustment mode
enter your measured tip temperature
and it'll adjust itself back to what
the temperature that you wish to use it
at but
for those of you who do not have one of
these tip thermometers
and you've gone through the adjustment
mode cycle
god knows however many times that you
went through it
and you don't know it by this point um
what
the actual tip temperature is at anymore
then there's one quick fix that you can
do you can always call us in
1-800-888 HAKKO or email us at support
hackleusa.com but before you do that
there's one quick fix that you can do
and that is to first of all turn off
your station
right and we're going to reset the
station
factory reset it and the way you do that
is
press and hold the up and enter buttons
at the same time and then turn the power
on
you'll get a flashing a okay this is a
a means asia you want to press the up
button one time to get a u
u means u s so you want to select the us
flashing u display hit enter
boom 750. i just you just did a factory
reset on your 888d station very quick
fix for those of you who've mistakenly
entered the adjustment mode thinking
that's how
you change your set temperature okay
so if i take another measurement it
should be back
somewhere close to 750 and not
as far as 150 degrees off
there you go 65 70
- and if you want to get it closer you
just enter that keep
entering the adjustment mode and make
your adjustment that way
again to use the adjustment mode you
really need a measurement tool some kind
of tip measurement tool so
i do recommend highly recommend everyone
get one of these
tip thermometers fg 100b
they're very very useful comes in handy
comes with a pack of sensors so you can
get started working out right away
they're battery operated
it even has accessories sold separately
that you can use to measure hot air
temperatures and
use it on solder pots as well so again i
recommend
anyone who uses soldering irons to get
one of these sg-100bs
okay but yeah going back to the FX888d
it's again it's a really nice station
very cost effective
great performance at that great price
point that we offer
it's one of our best selling stations

again it's right out of the box ready to
use already if you need to change the
temperature just remember
press and hold the enter button
okay if you don't have a tip thermometer
then and you've gone through that cycle
multiple times
you don't you want to get uh restart or
initial reset it
press and hold the up and enter buttons
sorry that's easier to see
turn the station on press the up until
you get to the flashing u
hit enter there you go you just that's
how you do the factory reset
so again just remember it has the
changing your temperature
one's changing your temperature one's
adjusting your temperature just know
that there's two different things if you
get confused
factory reset it if you have any other
